Platinum Gives Back at Casa de Dia
DUBUQUE, IOWA – Nearly 40 Platinum Supplemental Insurance Sales Representatives and employees took time out of an award trip in Los Cabos, Mexico, to help renovate Casa de Dia, a “day house” for the elderly.
The facility serves meals and provides a social outlet for 45 low-income elderly residents of San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.
Platinum Vice President, Mike Muench, says that the idea for the project began while reflecting on the company’s history.
“Platinum got its start selling long-term care insurance,” he said. “So we have a keen interest in the health and well-being of the elderly.”
Muench wanted to create an opportunity for sales reps and employees to ‘give back’ while enjoying their annual award trip.
Casa de Dia was quickly identified as a cause where Platinum could provide a lot of help. After years of neglect, the facility was in dire need of repair.
“Almost everything needed updates or repairs,” he said. “None of the air conditioners worked, the roof leaked, the septic system was overflowing into the yard. And the cook was preparing meals for nearly 50 people on a two burner hotplate. It was in rough shape.”
Two years ago, Platinum helped fund a new septic system at Casa de Dia by raising the needed $8,000 through employee and sales rep donations. In 2012, over $30,000 was raised to pay for a new roof, commercial kitchen equipment, 14 new toilets and new doors.
“It’s such a good feeling to be able to give of our time and resources in this way,” says Jim Parker, coordinator for the project. “Working for Platinum has afforded us comfortable lifestyles. It is gratifying to be able to share some of those resources while we enjoy our annual awards vacation.”
In recognition for the significant funding and efforts put forth by Platinum, the mayor of San Jose del Cabo sent a letter of gratitude to the company and its employees and representatives. The letter reads in part: “In the name of all grandfathers and grandmothers, please receive our sincere appreciation. Your gifts and your visits are very important to improve the quality of the life of all the grandparents who utilize Casa de Dia.”
